11 Solid Steps Towards a Greener Future at the Exchange

Here at The Exchange, we truly believe that creativity, community, and caring for our planet go hand in hand. This is why we've been working on our new Environmental Policy that we announced back in mid-May, to help us become a more sustainable organisation.

Let's be honest... Running a creative hub in a beautiful but poorly insulated and old Grade II-listed building isn't necessarily amazing on the planet. From water to keeping our garden alive and energy-hungry kilns, we're aware we have an impact. Even the smaller things like how often we use transport and where our materials are sourced, make a difference when all added up together. We want to work on these challenges and try to do better.

If you haven't read our new policy yet, here's a quick breakdown.

We're all committed

All our board members, staff and volunteers play a role in ensuring we stay on the right track. The team will be trained on best practices and the Board is making sure that climate responsibility is on the agenda at each meeting.

What steps are we taking?

  1. Climate Literacy: All our team members will be trained to understand climate issues and how they can take action in their roles.

  2. Greener Banking: We're switching our business banking to a more environmentally responsible provider such as Nationwide or the Co-operative Bank.

  3. Tracking Energy Usage: We’re going to keep an eye on our energy consumption by using Creative Climate Tools to understand areas we can improve.

  4. Equipment Use: Before we switch on energy-heavy equipment, we'll think twice and only use it if really needed.

  5. Sustainable Making: Greener thinking will go into every product made here, and every workshop we run; from reusable materials to slower design.

  6. Purchasing and Partners: We will avoid working with companies that have poor worker rights or unsustainable practices. We will only be working with partners and suppliers that share the same values as us.

  7. Eco-Friendly Travel: When guiding customers on how to get to us, we'll encourage public transport, walking or cycling.

  8. Upgraded Waste Management: We'll work to understand the type of waste we create so we can learn how to reduce it as well as composting, recycling and reusing.

  9. Sustainable Packaging: Our current approach is to reuse old print materials and all packaging is recyclable and biodegradable, so we'll stick with it.

  10. Programmes with Purpose: Environmental learning will be woven throughout our public events and programmes.

  11. A Greener Building: We're hoping to seek funding so we can develop a plan to equip The Old Library with greener energy solutions and better insulation.

What this means for our community

If you've ever visited us to join a workshop or enjoyed a coffee in The Garden Room, you are a part of our journey that ensures we're supporting a greener future within our beautiful space. We want to keep you updated along the way, whether you're a neighbour, maker or visitor. You will notice changes in the way we run our workshops, how we talk about the environment during events, and how we package products.

Tackling the climate crisis requires teamwork. It can only be done when we all come together with purpose. So here’s to growing greener, one step at a time.
