TIMBER WORkSHOP

 ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The Timber Workshop at The Exchange is a place where you can learn or develop your woodwork skills, and be part of a team that makes things for the benefit of community.

The Workshop runs on a volunteer basis. You don’t need any experience, but we do ask for commitment and generosity.

As a Volunteer Maker, you will work alongside some incredibly talented craftspeople and make beautiful, high-quality things that the community can either use, or that we can sell to raise money for our community programme.

CURRENT PROJECTS

CURRENT PROJECTS

CHAIRS + TABLES

The Timber Team have now made over 20 tables that were designed specifically to hang from the walls of the North Room at The Exchange mimicking the panelling that used to hang on the walls.

The tables - and the accompanying chairs - were designed by Mentsen who came in to teach us how to make these beautiful oak products (using mitre saw, drills and router table etc.), before we cracked on with it. These tables and chairs are now award-winning after winning the Production category at the Wood Awards!

We still have more chairs to make for the building (all used at community events) and have just started to make them for sale, raising money to keep what we do going!

If you want to learn how to make tables and chairs, and be part of this award-winning project, come and get involved!

FIT-OUT WORK

The Timber Team has been working with Atelier Thirty Four on the design and production of furniture for the upstairs spaces at The Exchange, including a break-out area for volunteers and staff, as well as desks, shelving and storage options.

This work is ongoing and we are looking for new Volunteers to help build the furniture.

This project has been directly supported by the Arts Council - thank you!

WORKSHOP PARTNERS

ATELIER Thirty four

Atelier Thirty Four is a London-based design consultancy established in 2022 by Dave Britton and Harry Hasson. They specialise in product, furniture, lighting and interior design and are interested in honest design.

A core part of their process is model making and prototyping. Understanding materials and how things are made, but also getting a sense of scale and proportion is a key part of their design development.

MENTSEN

Mentsen is a London-based design practice and a partnership between two Japanese designers, Yasuyuki Sakurai and Risa Sano. The studio name, meaning ‘surfaces and lines’ in Japanese, references to working in different mediums and scales.

Mentsen offer product design and art direction for businesses and cultural organisations. They work collaboratively with The Exchange to design timber products that can be made by the community, no matter what level of experience.
