Pottery Wheel Taster Session for ages 8 - 16

Get Your Hands Muddy: Pottery Wheel Taster Session for Ages 8–16

It's messy, it's tactile, and it's completely screen-free. Pottery wheel throwing is a fun and creative way to make your own pottery pieces.

Our beginner-friendly hands-on taster workshop gives children and teenagers an amazing opportunity to learn how to use a spinning wheel to shape clay into different forms such as bowls, cups, and vases. Everyone works at their own wheel with hands-on help throughout, and small class sizes mean nobody gets left out.

There will be plenty of second attempts, because squashing it and starting again is half the fun! Aprons are provided but clay gets everywhere, so please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Designed and led by Merissa Hylton, a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in London.

Please note, a parent or carer must stay with children under 12 for the whole session.

£5* | Spaces are limited so booking is essential | Part of our Loved & Wanted programme

*non-refundable deposit redeemable against purchases in The Garden Room Shop & Coffee Bar on the day

Turn “one day” into day one

How many craft kits do you have waiting at home?

Whether it’s rock painting, crochet, embroidery, needle felting, macramé, paper craft, painting by numbers, diamond painting, or something completely different, this is your chance each month to finally open the box and get started.

Bring your own craft kit. Suitable for adults of all abilities.

Craft Kit Rescue Club

Turn “one day” into day one

How many craft kits do you have waiting at home?

Whether it’s rock painting, crochet, embroidery, needle felting, macramé, paper craft, painting by numbers, diamond painting, or something completely different, this is your chance each month to finally open the box and get started.

Bring along your craft kit, treat yourself to a drink and a slice of cake from the Garden Room Coffee Bar, and enjoy a relaxed, friendly session where you can make a start alongside other creative people. If you’ve been putting it off because the instructions look daunting, you’re worried about making mistakes, or you simply don’t know where to begin, help is on hand.

This isn’t a formal class—everyone will be working on different projects at their own pace—but you’ll have encouragement, practical support and the motivation that comes from creating together.

No pressure. No expectations. Come solo or with friends. Just bring your kit, find a table, and take that first step.

Bring your own craft kit. Suitable for adults of all abilities.

The Mulberry Circle - Root · Flow · Flourish

The Mulberry Circle - Root • Flow • Flourish

Come and join The Mulberry Circle, a welcoming monthly gathering each month for women to pause, breathe and reconnect with themselves, one another and nature.

Held in the beautiful Mulberry Room at The Exchange and inspired by the nearby Mulberry Tree and Sarah Price Garden, each gathering offers a gentle space for rest, reflection, guided practices and meaningful conversation.

Wherever you find yourself today, you are warmly welcome. There is nothing to prove here. Together we become a little more rooted, a little more spacious, and a little more connected to ourselves, to one another and to what matters most.

The Mulberry Circle is a monthly gathering hosted by Benaifer Patell, a Daring to Rest Yoga Nidra Facilitator and Coach

Suggested Donation £10 (donate on the day in The Garden Room) | Book your spot!

Donation-based in support of  A Common Paradise, The Exchange's initiative to raise funds to maintain and support the wonderful Sarah Price garden at The Exchange for all to enjoy.

Help Shape Erith’s Future - design a public mural for erith

**Drop-in today & help design a public mural for erith!**

HELP SHAPE ERITH'S FUTURE - ART AND CLIMATE WORKSHOPS

INVITING LOCAL RESIDENTS, SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY GROUPS, YOUTH ORGANISATIONS, AND FAITH COMMUNITIES TO BE PART OF THE CHANGE.

Join us for a series of 4 creative workshops where we will explore local environmental issues together and turn our ideas into a community mural. Working with climate educator, Sammantha Mason, and artist, Danni Miles, participants will learn, share ideas, and help design artwork that reflects what matters to our neighbourhood. The final mural will be displayed locally, celebrating our shared vision for a cleaner, greener future.

These workshops are a chance for communities to reflect on how climate change and environmental degradation impacts their everyday lives and what avenues and tools are available for them to combat that. Through a comprehensive co-creation methodology you will work with experts to understand these concerns at a deeper level, visualise what your collective goals as a community are in the form of a mural design and lay down the foundation for a more comprehensive local climate action campaign.

Come solo or with friends - no experience needed and all materials will be provided. The workshops are open to all and child-friendly, although we do ask that under16s are accompanied by an adult.

FREE | Drop-in today!

We encourage people to be part of the entire process but you are welcome to join whichever session(s) you can:

Friday 24 July, 1pm - 4pm · Saturday 25 July, 11am - 2pm · Friday 31 July, 1pm - 4pm · Saturday 01 August, 11am - 2pm

These workshops are part of Cleaner, Greener East London — a community-led campaign bringing people together across East London to take action on environmental challenges through creativity, learning, and community action. By taking part, you are helping shape a greener future not just for your neighbourhood, but for communities across the region.

Shape, Cast and Create: A Garden Vessel Workshop

Shape, Cast and Create: A Garden Vessel Workshop

Join renowned landscaper Mark Whyman and his team for this hands-on workshop making bespoke garden vessels as seen in Sarah Price’s 2023 Chelsea garden and more recently at Cedric Morris’ Benton End garden.

This is a rare chance to learn the custom recipe originally created by Local Works Studio, who designed and produced the brick paving at The Exchange.

Mark and the team will guide you through how to adapt the colour, shape and texture for your own designs and the finished vessels can be used decoratively or with purpose: as plant pots, shallow bird baths, or small water sources for birds and insects. At The Exchange, we’ll be placing them among the planting to add texture, character and habitat value to the garden.

Mark will be demonstrating two techniques, one using the excavated cast option (digging), and one using the exposed cast option (mounding). Whichever site you are working on, you should be able to make one of these in-situ.

During the workshop, we’ll create several large vessels for The Exchange garden. You’ll also make a smaller vessel of your own design, ready to collect from The Exchange once it has cured two weeks later. If you’d prefer not to keep it, we’d be delighted to use it here in our garden.

Everyone is welcome — gardeners, landscapers, makers and curious beginners alike. No previous experience is needed, just a willingness to get hands-on. Come solo or with friends but places are limited so book soon to secure your spot!

£50 | Drop-in places may be available - ask in The Garden Room

Our Garden Room Shop & Coffee Bar will be open from 10am - 4pm on the day, selling drinks, snacks, baked treats and local ice cream, but please bring your own lunch if you don’t have time to eat beforehand.
